WP Helps Local High School Bring Ideas to Life

Tucson, AZ April 17, 2009 – Students from the Flowing Wells High School graphic design class spent a day working with the print professionals at West Press. Recently, these students won a local four-school design competition, and West Press wanted to help them take their award winning design from concept to completion. “Creating a ‘cool’ look is one thing, but getting it to print like you want it to look isn’t as easy as it sounds,” said Louisa Albrecht, Senior Designer for West Press. While at West Press, the students learned how to setup their own files for printing and then followed the pieces through the production process.

Earlier this month, four area High Schools (Flowing Wells, Marana, Sahuarita and Cholla) participated in the Tucson Area High School Graphic Design Championships. Each school had two hours to create a logo and marketing material for a local business. Judging was based on: Idea development (logo and advertisement), final design, and presentation. Representatives from the Art Institute and Albrecht, judged the competition.  The winning presentation and design was awarded to Flowing Wells High School.

Summing up the day Mike Srsen, Art/Graphic Design Teacher for Flowing Wells said, “Visiting West Press was a valuable educational experience for the students who participated. The more connections we can give them to real-world industry conditions, the better we can prepare them for their future. Thank you to the West Pres staff for providing us with this valuable opportunity.”

West Press is dedicated to helping people who are interested in the Printing and Graphic Industry. “We need young people to become interested in our industry,” commented Kristy Scharf, President of West Press. “As print leaders, it is our responsibility to support the future of printing through scholastic programs and events such as this design competition. Plus, it’s fun to see the look on their faces when they see their ideas come to life.”
